Second study visit and knowledge exchange workshop in Velenje
Study visit started with a tour of the collection site center Velenje 1, where representative of PUP-Saubermacher d.o.o. explain the work of the center, located at the closed municipal landfill of the City of Velenje. The center consists of: the recycling yard for collecting waste from citizens and businesses that be recycled and hazardous waste separately by type; transfer stations, in which mixed waste for the purpose of more efficient and cheaper transport is compacted into larger sealed containers (30 m3); storage and service areas. Head of the business center at PUP-Saubermacher, Ms. Alenka Centrih explained in the manner of collection and disposal of waste and costs of waste management.
After that the participants visited the Re-use center Velenje, where they were presented with their work, the way of collecting items from the customers and their repair, refurbishment and re-marketing. Re-use center rearranges objects for reuse and sells them at a symbolic price, which is jointly determined by the staff. The social component of the Re-use center is reflected in the low selling prices of items which thus become accessible to people with lower purchasing power. They also employ people who have spent a long time on the labor market. Their sallary is ensured by the Municipality of Velenje.
In the second part of the visit, the participants headed to Celje, where they visited the Regional Waste Management Centre Celje (RCERO), where they reviewed the technology, transport, receipt, sorting, treatment and disposal of waste. It is interesting that, after mechanical-biological waste treatment and separation of materials that can be recovered, the remaining combustible waste is used as fuel for cogeneration plant, which heats the city Celje.
Within the Centre there are also storages of equipment and materials, and participants had the opportunity to see the different types of containers used in Slovenia for separate waste collection and materials that can be recycled, as well as a "mobile recycling yard" for the collection of household hazardous waste, the same as is planned to be applied in the area of Velika Gorica.
